"A Father’s Discipline" Originally authored on 19 July 2004 by Brandon Burton Hebrews 12:10 “Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness.” (NIV) Here is a scripture that is sometimes difficult to understand and deal with. Yet, this is a scripture contained in God’s word that reveals truth. It is common for people to try to understand this sort of issue in one of two ways. Some have a belief that God is a kind old gentleman who does not get upset over anything. He is sometimes viewed as a type of Santa Claus. He is sometimes perceived as a nice grandfather-like figure who bestows many kind blessings and gifts. This view can be accompanied by a belief that God would not have any part in difficult parts of our lives. Although some of these characteristics very well may be true, I do not believe God is limited to those characteristics. Another way that some may view God is as a harsh ruler who is waiting for them to make a mistake so that He can hit them with a lightning bolt. This view is of a distant and harsh God that lacks mercy and love. For people who hold this sort of view, it must be difficult to be close to God. How could one be close to God if He is waiting to inflict pain on you for not being perfect? Oftentimes, peoples’ view of God is shaped by their earthly fathers. I want to encourage you if you are one of these people who have mistaken perceptions about your Heavenly Father. I believe God wants all of us to have an accurate understanding of Him. I believe God is calling upon you to draw nearer to Him to understand Him in a more intimate way. He knows the difficulties you are going through in life. He tells us in this scripture that He does discipline us, and He does it for our good. It is so important to remember in all things that God loves us. He has not forsaken you at this time in your life. Please let the next verse in Hebrews speak to your heart: “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” (Hebrews 12:11, NIV). Back to: Encouragement Home |
