“Gospel
of Judas:” Exposing the Agenda in
the Media 10
April 2006 Over the last several days, the mainstream media has been aggressively promoting the “gospel of Judas.” At the same time, National Geographic is advertising a special on the “gospel of Judas.” This is being reported as news because this 1700 year-old document entitled the “gospel of Judas” has been discovered that purports to have insight into the relationship of Christ and Judas. It is not surprising that such a headline would attract great amounts of interest especially with the media hyping this story as having an impact on the way people of faith view the Gospel and the Bible. Headlines such as this are especially interesting to someone such as myself who loves studying history and archeology as it relates to the Bible. A disturbing trend developed as the major news media discussed the issues relating to this age verified “gospel of Judas.” The manner in which this news was presented was done in such a way that brought about confusion and many unanswered questions. In an alarming trend, the major media outlets were presenting this piece of news in an eerily similar manner. After viewing the news on one network, a quick change of the channel would find a similar treatment of the subject matter on another news network. Was it mere coincidence that broad mainstream media would be hyping such news stories at about the same time? Is it coincidence that National Geographic is heavily promoting it’s television special on the “gospel of Judas” in conjunction with the news outlets? After observing the content of the news presentation, it became increasingly clear that this was a coordinated assault on people’s faith and beliefs regarding Christianity. That a worldly media outlet would assault Christ is no surprise, but it was close to shocking to me that so many of the major media outlets would focus on this “gospel of Judas” in an almost transparent coordinated manner. An example of this disturbing trend was by NBC’s Today host, and recently hired CBS news anchor Katie Couric, when she appeared to be enthusiastic about the revelation of this recently found document being called the “gospel of Judas.” Her questions in this segment regarding this topic seemed to reveal an almost excited expectation of undermining the true Gospel of Christ. As I turned from one media outlet (NBC, ABC, CBS) to the other, they were covering this topic in a like manner in a close time approximation. This coverage has been happening as Christians are nearing the celebration of Palm Sunday, Passover, and Christ’s resurrection. Let us not forget that it does not appear to be coincidental that “The DaVinci Code” is about to be released in movie theatres as an expected summer blockbuster. It appears to me that this is no coincidence, and I suspect that something far more sinister is at work here. A further examination of some of the underlying issues will bring to light why this “gospel of Judas” presented by the worldly news outlets had a disturbing feel. The underlying thread that connects all of these seemingly disparate issues of the “gospel of Judas,” “The DaVinci Code,” and the timing around the high holy days when much time is focused on Christ and His Gospel is, in a word, Gnosticism. Gnosticism is a belief system that has been condemned as heresy since the earliest days of the Christian church. In short, Gnosticism is a varied mystical belief system where the adherents believed they had special knowledge. Central to Gnostic beliefs was that Christ Jesus did not exist in human form as they believed He was only spirit. This heretical belief appears to have drawn much attention and rejection from the apostles and early church fathers for its’ assault on the foundational truths of the Gospel and The Bible. This Gnosticism is the connection between the “gospel of Judas” and “The DaVinci Code.” The recently discovered “gospel of Judas” is rooted in gnosticism, and it is apparently connected to several other historical writings that were Gnostic papers that the early church fathers soundly rejected. It has been variously reported that “The DaVinci Code” has some of it’s basis rooted in Gnosticism. It is not surprising then to discover that the media would take up the mantle to assault foundational Christian truths when it promotes writings that are based on Gnosticism. One of the disturbing manners in which this heretical system promotes itself has been evidenced in the media over the last few days. It has not been limited to the last few days, but it certainly has been on display in a public manner. It is the subtlety of the media elites and expert scholars attacks on peoples’ foundational Christian belief systems that is dangerous and leaves one with a disturbing feel. This subtle attack usually begins with some controversial perspective being presented that has a kernel of truth but still may be overall distorted. When this questionable data is presented to the less informed unsuspecting victim, they are usually left with a sense of confusion and angst as their basic faith system has just been called into question. This questioner is usually a perceived expert that provides for the questioner some amount of speaking with authority on the issue. It is common for most people to give the expert scholar the benefit of the doubt since they have studied and researched the issue. Plus, the unsuspecting victim might ask him or herself why the expert scholar would be dishonest about supposed historic or scientific facts. With the unsuspecting victim now left with some angst, the perpetrator maneuvers in such a subtle way that results in the victim giving the proposition more credence. The next step usually takes place by the supposed expert scholar telling the victim that the victim’s beliefs are not wrong, but that the victim has just been uninformed. This befriending “you are not wrong” tactic seems to disarm the victim thus giving the perpetrator more credibility. This usually liberal-minded scholar will usually go on to make such assertions, as in this case, that beliefs in Christianity are more diverse than the enslaving fundamental Christianity of tradition. It is under such circumstances that people such as the media elite and liberal scholars assault foundational Christian truths under a guise of increased gnosis (a.k.a. knowledge). It is this false worldly belief system combined with deception and the lure of increased power through special knowledge or enlightenment that helps set the stage for heresy. This is at the core of the events that are currently unfolding. A false belief system, Gnosticism, is being promoted in a subtle manner with the actual intended purpose of undermining the true Gospel of Christ. This is not the first time Christianity has experienced this. The Apostle John addressed this Gnostic heresy in The Holy Scriptures when there were some that were claiming that Christ had not come to Earth as a human being in the flesh. This is the same sort of belief system that is connected to this “gospel of Judas” and “The DaVinci Code.” Let’s see what the Apostle John has to say about such belief systems that are in the world in 1 John 4:2-3 where he states: “This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.” (NIV) It is clear from this passage of The Holy Scriptures that there is something severely sinister at work in this false worldly belief system that attempts to assault the truths of Christ. It is becoming increasingly clear that this same sinister spirit of antichrist that was attempting to assault the truths of Christ during the early church age is still engaging in the same sinister strategies in the modern era. Let yourself not be deceived or surprised by these schemes of the spirit of antichrist as the scriptures have foretold that these deceptions would be foisted upon people in the end of days. When confronted with such deceptive worldly schemes of knowledge and enlightenment, it would be wise to heed the words of the Apostle John in 1 John 2:15 when he states: “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” (NIV)
